The White Mans Fear Depicted in Cry, the Beloved Country...

The time of the 1940’s in South Africa was defined by racial oppression of the native inhabitants of the country by the Dutch Boers, also known as the Afrikaners. These people were the demographic minority yet also the political majority. They executed almost complete control over the lives of the natives through asinine rules and harsh punishments. The highly esteemed novel Cry, the Beloved Country tells a story of Stephen Kumalo, a black priest dealing with the struggles of living in the South Africa during this time. His son killed a white man and on the day his son is to be hanged for this crime, Kumalo climbs a mountain in order to reflect on the current situation both in his family and in his country. In chapter 36 of Cry, the†¦show more content†¦This section demonstrates how the fear manifested itself among the whites. The Afrikaners’ power is not in numbers, as â€Å"they were few† but instead in political authority. They exploit this and impose harsh laws on the black to try to control and restrict them. However, they have bound themselves in their fear of the natives, a force that is perhaps more confining than their rules. Instead of trying to understand their fear and show their compassion towards these other human beings, they instead choose to hide it so that they will not appear weak. Additionally, the solution of love that Paton suggests presents a conundrum. In order end the fear, they must love, but to love they must stop being afraid. This demonstrates the almost impossible nature of true equality occurring between the natives and the Afrikaners. In the last paragraph of chapter 36, Alan Paton uses symbolism to bring a clearer recognition to his final message. He says the â€Å"the dawn has come†¦Ndotsheni is still in darkness, but light will come there also.† The dawn symbolizes a new era of equality and cooperation in South Africa. In the cycle of night and day, dawn is the beginning of the light a nd goodness. The people who live in the darkness prefer to do so because it is where they cannot see what they do; the darkness blinds them to their own atrocities. When the sun comes, they see their

Theories That Have Information About Behaviour And The...

There are many theories that have information about behaviour, most of them reflect a cognitive perspective, focusing mainly on the role of conscious thought and feeling. This essay is going to be based on the theories based on theorist Sigmund Freud and B.F Skinner and their perception if our behaviour is beyond our control. The first psychologist that I will be discussing is Sigmund Freud and his perspective on behaviour and the conscious mind. Within this essay I will be focusing on the unconscious mind, the id ego and super ego, the defence mechanisms, psychosexual stages and also a case study on Anna O. The second psychologist I will be discussing is B F skinner and will cover operant and classical conditioning, positive and negative reinforcement and finally behaviour shaping modification. Freud was known for being the main theorist who explored the human mind more thoroughly than any other theorist after him. Freud believes when we give an account of our behaviour it is rarely a true account of our motivation is given. This is because humans are very good at self-deception and there for lie. Freud often used psychoanalysis as a talking cure, as he encouraged his patients to speak freely about what their symptoms were and describe exactly what was on their mind McLeod, S (2013). One of the studies that Freud did was based on Anna O (real name Bertha Pappenheim), she suffered from a condition known as hysteria, which is when someone experiences physical symptomsShow MoreRelatedDiscuss What Makes the Psychodynamic Approach Unique. In this function is the population at time O, P is the population after time t, and k is called the exponential growth rate. For this problem about the population of rats, represents the rats population at O, P is the rats population after time t 7 days and 14 for 2 weeks as seen in and and k is the rats exponential growth rate which is represented by the 13. 6% or the decimal O. We will write a custom essay sample on Assignment The Solution or any similar topic only for you Order Now 136. Using this equation we calculate that in 1 week the rats have grown from 100 rats to 259 rats and in 2 weeks the rats have grown from 100 rats to 671 rats. The sat part of this problem asks us to find the doubling time of the population of the rats. The algebraic solution for this is represented by solving for T. The equation for this is and now I will tell you what it substitutes. We substitute 200 for and the rest of the equation uses the natural logarithm to solve for doubling time of the rats population. Some of the topics in this course this problem relates to are natural logarithms, exponential functions, and graphing. These functions are applicable to the business, science, psychology and sociology fields. The Intersect method for this problem is used in the technology field. The answer from this problem states the population of rats will double in 2 weeks. Method The method of problem solving that I use is, I find another problem like this one and match the numbers up to the equation of the other problem, solve this problem parallel to the other problem following the guided steps, essentially multi-tasking, solving two problems at the same time. I call this method â€Å"Killing two birds with one stone. † Once I have worked both problems to their simplified form, I input this information into a calculator to arrive at y answer. The variety Of ways to solve this problem is through the use Of a calculator and the growth / decay formula. My rationale for selecting the method adopted is because like to keep things simple. Pre;calculus is complicated as it is. It would be easy for me to overprint solving problems if I did not keep it simple. Also tend to not fully grasp the concepts unless solve the problems slowly and double checking my work. Explanation The easiest way can explain solving this problem to someone would be to patiently go through the problem step-by-step with them pausing along the ay making sure they are grasping the concepts of solving the problem. I would start by reading the word problem thoroughly, taking note of the numbers in the word problem. I would then use the exponential growth rate formula matching the numbers up to the equation and begin to solve the problem using P. E. M. D. A. S. It is a staple to any math problem. Certain rules apply that cannot be ignored. Will conclude this problem with assisting them through the doubling formula of to find its solution. Conclusion The solution to the population of rat’s problem clearly states that using the exponential growth function, the rat’s population after one week is 259 rats and the population doubles after two weeks giving us 671 rats. If my calculations are correct the 5 for T in the solution represents a 5 year mark? This solution Was derived by dividing the natural logarithm of Len by the percentage of 0. 136 in decimal form. Given this information it is possible to state that the rats population will double in size from 671 in two weeks to another greater number in 5 years. I will firmly agree that this solution is correct. How to cite Assignment The Solution, Papers

Canadian Black Bear Essays - Bears, American Black Bear, Brown Bear

Canadian Black Bear The Canadian Black Bear There are 8 kinds of bears (Ursus) in the world but I chose the North American Black bear (Ursus americanus). I will be covering general information about the bear such as their size, weight, color, food, etc., but I will concentrate mainly on the hibernating cycle of the black bear. There are from 400,000 to 750,00 black bears in North America, and they weigh from 130 to 660 pounds with a body length of 50 to 75 inches. Their colors vary from black, chocolate brown, cinnamon brown, pale blue (known as glacier bears) to white. Black bears will often have a brown muzzle and may have a lighter color patch on its chest. Its feet are equipped with strong, highly curved claws. They're omnivores; eating nuts, berries, fruits, insects (especially ants), deer and moose fawns, carrion and in coastal areas on spawning salmon. Their habitat includes forests with occasional open areas such as meadows. They occupy all of Canada starting from the tree line going south. They live in all provinces and territories except Prince Edward Island, where heavy de-forestation has happened and preferably away from brown bears (larger competitors). The only main risk for black bears are poachers who sell their parts illegally to the Asian medicinal market. In northern areas of Canada, the bear undergoes a remarkable metabolic transformation as it prepares for hibernation. Hibernation is an energy-saving process bears have developed to let them survive for long periods when there is insufficient food available to maintain their body mass. When they stop eating and become increasingly lethargic, the bear will enter a cave; dig out a den; or hole up in a dense brush pile, hollow log or tree cavity and hibernate. Right before it does this it starts to gain weight so it can survive the long months ahead. It can gain as much as 30 pounds per week. The bear hibernates between four to seven months. When it's in a hibernating state the bear's heart rate drops from between forty to seventy beats per minute to only eight to twelve beats per minute. Its metabolism slows down by half, and its body temperature reduces by 3 to 7 degrees Centigrade (5 to 9 degrees Fahrenheit). Also its body doesn't release any wastes like urea or solid fecal waste but instead it's recycled into usable proteins. During the hibernation period adult males and adolescent bears lose between 15% and 30% of their weight while a female cub with newborn loses as much as 40% of her weight. Most black bears vacate their winter dens over a one to two month period starting in April or May. Both the climatic conditions (snow cover and temperature) and physiological factors such as the bear's age, the status of its health and its remaining fat reserves affect the time it comes out. Normally, adult males emerge first. Females with newborn cubs are usually the last ones to leave their den, and continue with their life cycle. Bibliography I only used the web to find information and these are the sights I visited: http://www.nature-net.com/bears/black.html http://www.bearden.org Animal Science

Kenny is also very careful with his word choice, using attention-grabbing words like â€Å"veteran† and â€Å"revenue generation† in his objective statement to underline that experience to the reader. Word choice is so important on your resume- in a world where every job opening gets a lot of applicants, the words you choose can make the difference between an interview invite and a shuffle past- so choose wisely! Use words that emphasize how great you are, and speak to the skills and experience you want to highlight. Kenny also uses narrative to his advantage by giving a brief summary for each of his jobs to frame what he wants to emphasize in each one.Next up we have another restaurant veteran, Kelsey, who wants to make the jump to senior management, after years of serving and floor managing.download this resume in ms wordKelsey Choi 433 Rosa Parks Blvd, apt 4g Birmingham, AL 21212 kelseyc@emaildomain.com (777) 888-9999Experienced server with demonstrated leadership experience. To do this, she needs to show her information in a very efficient way. Because she does have a lot of experience, and wants to show how multi-faceted she is a manager, she opts against the standard objective statement and instead uses a summary statement. This sets the tone of the rest of her resume, and gives her a guideline for the bullets she’ll use later, when describing her experience.Speaking of her experience, Kelsey sticks to her narrative by listing her most relevant jobs. She may have others, but these are the ones that showcase her development as a server and manager, which is what she wants to emphasize in order to level up in that area. This way, she has room to talk about her skills, without creating an overcrowded novel of a resume. For her skills, Kelsey doesn’t just list them- she provides brief examples or explanatory notes for each. Nothing too extensive, but enough to show the reader that she has concrete background for each. She should be prepared to discuss these in more depth (or add more examples) in an interview.Kelsey’s lowest priority (in her resume, not in life!) is her education. This is important, but this is a case where kelsey wants to emphasize her skills and experience in action. So while it’s key to note that she has degrees and certification, it’s not necessarily her headline. The key to crafting an effective resume is paying attention to what goes where. Templates and structure are great as a starting point, but you want your resume to make you shine- and that means customizing the doc to put your strongest professional qualities right under the nose of the resume reader. If you’re looking for a food service job, thejobnetwork has you covered. check out the below listings to find a job in your area:Find restaurant server jobsFind restaurant supervisor jobsFind food service manager jobs

Dave and Busters Tour Coursework Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Dave and Busters Tour - Coursework Example The gaming zone is a major attraction at all the branches. Games on offer include pool and bowling. Whereas in the arcade gaming zone Star Wars, Kung Fu Panda, Transformers, Batman, Fishbowl Frenzy and various others are available to play. In addition to all this the restaurant also provides sponsorships for major events such as WWE and UFC. Keeping in mind these offerings it is important to understand that the franchise needs some refurbishments. Hence if I were running the place I would make the following changes. Food is an attraction for people and delicious food is a reason for them to come again. If I were to set the menu of the restaurant I would do it with keeping in mind what type of crowd the place generates. Prices of the food items need to be monitored as the prices to certain dishes are high. My target audiences are the kids because they require a place to hangout, where they could eat and get entertained. I would include various deals for youngsters by which they could enjoy a worthy meal and could also try their hands on a few games. I would also provide them with bottomless sodas. I would also set the menu for other age groups. If certain people just come to drink or play games I would offer them with food tastings that would tempt them to get the whole meal. Another major addition to the food section is the commencement of breakfast. Breakfasts are the first meals of the day, hence if we provide healthy and delicious breakfast to our customers they would come back later for the other attractions. I would reassess the gaming and arcade zone again as it attracts people from all age groups. I would sponsor championships for billiards and bowling. The sponsored championships would have good prize money and a chance to become a lifelong member at Dave and Buster’s restaurants. Whereas for the video gaming section a similar scheme can be applied, where I would organize regular events for the gamers. Playing video games

Is the Anglo-American special relationship an equal relationship Essay

Is the Anglo-American special relationship an equal relationship - Essay Example The term had its roots in the shared values, common language and historical experiences. The term provided that the two countries were to collaborate in the fight against a common enemy and pursue of common objectives together. The Anglo-American co-operation also discouraged the American manipulation of the British economic weakness. It also helped to manage the mismatch between Britain’s overseas capabilities and commitments. The Anglo-American treaty meant that US was to tolerate the British discriminatory practices such as support for British established overseas interest, the sterling Area and allow the British policy makers to abandon their unsustainable territories without US viewing Britain as a weak country (Dorey 2005, p.73). The aspiration of the Anglo-American relationship seemed unrealistic after the Second World War. This was because of the loan given to UK by US during the Second World War, severe differences over the Palestine question, the unbridled pursuit of international free trade by US, and betrayal in the nuclear research. The reaffirmation of the special relationship between the two countries enabled Britain to regain some of its lost influence in Washington. The relationship created opportunities to for UK to harness Americans powers. the British and US took a central role in the structuring of post war international order by creating institution such as the UN security council, the Bretton Wood system, the NATO and the GATT. The mutual economic interdependence strengthened the partnership between UK and US. For example, the sterling become the reserve currency for the Bretton woods system, America surpassed Australia as the British biggest export market in the year 1956. The Anglo-American economic relation was also crucial in the subordination of the multilateralism enforcement to the western world by US (Dorey 2005, p.74). The central agenda in the Anglo-American co-operation was the defense alliance, which involved the sharin g of military technology and intelligence. For example, the US Atomic Energy act restored the nuclear relationship curtailed by the McMahon Act. Britain also accessed the US key to controversial bases and facilities in the homeland and the Polaris submarine base (Dorey 2005, p.74). Britain also benefited a lot from the Anglo-American relationship during the cold war. America provided several economic relief and the Britain transferred unsustainable territories of Greece and turkey. This was important for the two nations as US was British greatest friend and it helped to maintain the impression of the Anglo-American solidarity. America was the power capable of supporting the British interest, and Britain’s international status relied on the American willingness to treat Britain as a partner in their relationship (Dorey 2005, p.74). The Anglo-American relationship played a crucial role in Britain’s international policy during the Second World War. During this period, Bri tain needed to win US sympathy and material aid so as to survive, especially after the fall of France in July 1940. After 1940, the propaganda about Britain’s ailing economy spread in North America. This made Britain seek financial aid from US president, Franklin Roosevelt in the form of a ‘lend’ lease programme to finance it war programmes (Addison

Philosophy- Does God exist Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Philosophy- Does God exist - Essay Example If so, then there must be a mover. This mover cannot be the thing itself for a thing cannot itself to move. So it must have been a first unmoved mover, i.e. God. Therefore, God exists. For many years, I was convinced of Aquinas’ argument until I learned of a philosopher who was quite skeptical of Aquinas’ ways. His name is David Hume. Hume was an empiricist who accepted the senses as the source of knowledge. He formulated his empiricist principle based on what we can know through our senses alone. Thus, metaphysical notions such as â€Å"God† are, for Hume, imaginary fictions of our minds, due to our notion of cause and effect. Therefore, the idea of a God is meaningless for Hume. â€Å"So God does not exist?† Asked my friend. â€Å"Hume does not think that should be the question to ask. But rather, is man capable of knowing if there’s anything beyond the realm of sense experience? And the answer is: we don’t know.† I answered. â€Å" But there must be a way to know!† My friend said. So I told her about a philosopher named Rene Descartes. Descartes was, unlike Hume, a rationalist. He provided three proofs for God’s existence. Only one however, drew my attention as well. Here, Descartes uses the process of elimination when asking whether I, who has an idea of a perfect being, can exist without that perfect being, i.e. God.

Challenges Faced by Li and Fung

Challenges Faced by Li and Fung Overview: Li Fung is business to business company, working as a third party or middle men between retailers and suppliers or manufacturers. The company has been operating successfully in this market since its establishment in 1906. Li Fung was started as a partnership venture in China and was known as an export trading company with overseas merchants as main customers. Later Li Fung also entered into the business of warehousing and manufacturing. The company was shifted from being a family owned business to listed company by the third generation of the family. The company deals in both soft and hard goods, but focuses more on hard goods as they offer higher margins as compared to soft goods. The company was operating on the old traditional model of physical offline existence. But the advent of internet technology has somewhat changed the scenario and has raised serious concerns about the profitable companys operation. There has been a trend that the online competitors of almost every business are outclassing their offline competitor organizations and firms. Li Fung has been also concerned about the emergence of different online business to business companies which can decrease the companys market share and profitability. The management of the company is looking for different ways and strategies in order to cope up with this threat. It is important for almost every company to change and modify their business and operations according to changing contexts and situations otherwise the company will not be able to operate profitability. The management of Li Fung understands this fact and is always ready to incorporate new technology into the business operations. The company is looking to go for a defensive and offensive strategy at the same time and is introducing online operations along with offline operations. This will not only defend the companys position against the online business to business companies but will also give competition to them because of good and high reputation of the company. Problems Facing the Organization: The different problems faced by Li Fung are listed below in order of priority or importance: The increasing trend of internet technology and online companies and business has posed a serious threat to the competitiveness of the traditional offline companies. The online business unit of Li Fung which has been established with the name of lifung.com can result in cannibalization of the companys offline services and business. The uncertainty of the success of online business model created by Li Fung targeting small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). The possibility of other strong competitors to copy the online business model of the company. The expertise required for the efficient handling of online business model. The employees resistance to installation and usage of new technology and business models and concepts. Discussion: The main problem which is being faced by Li Fung is the threat of losing profitability and market share because of the emergence of business to business online companies. With more and more companies using internet technology as well as increasing number of online businesses coming up have posed a serious threat to the competitiveness of the traditional offline companies. Because companies can operate at a lower cost and can reach more customers across the world by using internet, therefore with less investment and targeting more customers in more markets, this has become one of the major threats for Li Fung. Also because Li Fung has been majorly selling its products traditionally like an offline company therefore as the company has started its online business unit as well with the name of lifung.com it can hurt the core competency of the company through which it was generating revenue. And this can outclass or cannibalize the companys traditional way or operations and business. Besides this, one of the main distinguishing features of Li Fung was that it was focusing more on traditional methods to sell the products however, this focus has also been changed and it would change the overall organizational culture and its strategies. Besides this, employees would have to learn new methods and new ways to do the business and they need to be trained again. So it might create a mess for the employees and the management of the company. Thus, new challenges would be faced by the company and this new challenging situation can be a threat for the company as it can hurt its customer base and its cu rrent service quality. Besides this, the other threat faced by Li Fung is that the company has started their online business to cope up with the industry trend however, the success of online business model created by the company is uncertain as it is targeting small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). As the company has not been involved in doing business online therefore Li Fung does not have the expertise and people to manage this emerging industry trend and therefore the future of the company is a big question mark. Strategic Organizational Alternatives: The possible strategic organizational alternatives which can be thought for as formulating beneficial and profitable future strategies are: The company can convert its offline business to the online business. The company can operate with both business models i.e. traditional brick and mortar model and new concept of online business which will complement each other. Another strategic option is that company offers different business models for different target markets according to their needs and requirements. The company can involve employees in the change process and can conduct learning and training programs in order to make the process of change smooth. The first three strategies are mutually exclusive and company has to decide on any one of it. If company decides to convert its offline business to the online business there is possibility of huge cost cutting and large profit margins but the company has to work on building an altogether new image in the mind of consumers. At the moment the company is being positioned and recognized as a traditional old business model company. The second strategy foster that online business can complement the offline business of the company this again will provide an opportunity to compete with the business to business online companies but this can result in increasing costs of operations. The third strategy of introducing different business models for different target markets will help the company to develop and increase the market size and business but this can result in cannibalization of the companys traditional offline business model. The fourth strategy is not mutually exclusive and company will have to incorporate this strategy will any other strategy it decides to implement. Scenarios: The different environmental and organizational scenarios that can be faced by the company are: The business to business online companies outclass the companys offline services. There is very little possibility of likelihood of this event to occur because of the efficiency and competitive advantage Li Fung has created in the market. The failure of the online venture of the company with the name of lifung.com. This scenario also has very little possibility because the company has done proper research about this decision. The failure or collapse of the technical support and basis required for starting online business. There is a possibility of this event because the company has entered into contract with Castling group for the technical expertise and the staff of Li Fung is untrained. If at any later stage there is problem or issues in the contract or the contract is terminated the company will be facing problem on part of technical expertise. Conclusion: It is necessary and mandatory for companies to change and adapt themselves according to the changing conditions and circumstances. Same is the case with Li Fung, the company is successfully operating according to its traditional old business model but the advent of new internet technology has posed serious threat to the competitiveness of the business. In order to operate profitability and remain competitive in the market the company has to incorporate the new technology into its operations and have to formulate not only defensive but also offensive strategies to retain the market position and increase the market share.

The Benefits of FFA Membership Essay -- Expository Essays Research Pap

The spacious, mute auditorium is suddenly turned into a buzzing social center as the large double doors are swung open by thousands of enthusiastic young members of the National FFA Organization. Although the topics of their conversations may range from discussions on recent use of Global Positioning Satellites in tractors, to arguments over the greatest country singer of all time, these young people all have one thing in common. They are all wearing the blue corduroy jacket of the FFA, proudly displaying the FFA emblem on the back, embroidered with blue and gold thread. These members are standing in the center of Freedom Hall; the main auditorium used to hold the National FFA Convention in Louisville, Kentucky. They are anxiously awaiting the first session of the first National Convention to be held in Kentucky. Amidst the sea of blue and gold, one member stands silently in awe of the multitude of people. The sleeves of his blue jacket hang stiffly at his side and the copper zipper shines brightly; both signs of a brand new jacket-- a brand new FFA member. His face looks passive as if he really doesn't know how to react, but the sparkle in his eyes betrays his excitement. This is the first FFA activity he has attended as a high school freshman. To the average person, the boy looks quiet and shy. However, a seed of strength is beginning to take root inside this young man. Cognitive Design Essay

A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khalid Hosseini is seen through the eyes of two young female protagonists, who have a strong and well-developed character. In the novel, the author shows their hardship, their lives in a hopeless society, Afghanistan, and how throughout their life they face cruelty and vulnerability. The author portrays the experiences of the two Afghan women, Mariam and Laila, who live in a society where women are mistreated. Mariam’s character is described as a quiet and thoughtful girl who questions the society and dreams of a luxurious life. She experiences physical and mental abuse from almost every person in her life and is brought up in an isolated environment by a bitter mother who puts her down. For instance, in the beginning of the novel Nana, Mariam’s mother, says: â€Å"You are a clumsy little harami† (Hosseini, 4). This very word â€Å"harami† helps the reader to analyze the struggles of an illegitimate child. Nana also prepares Mariam to expect nothing from men: â€Å"Like a compass needle that always point north, a man’s accusing finger always finds a woman. Always †¦. Mariam† (Hosseini, 7). This is also used to foreshadow Mariam’s husband, Rasheed, a cruel, abusive and hot tempered man, who physically and verba lly abuses Mariam after marriage. Although Laila was also brought up in the same society as Mariam, her character is stronger as compared to Mariam’s. She has a strong desire to use her intelligence and education to improve the society and as her father, tells her: â€Å"Marriage can wait, education cannot†¦ You can be anything you want†¦ Because a society has no change of success if its women are uneducated†¦ No chance† (Hosseini, 114). The characters personality evolves over time, and this helps to analyze the tragic themes of the novel which are oppression, hope, and internal strength of women. The ability for any individual to imagine to endure the pain and sacrifices that Mariam and Laila endured are overwhelming. Yet the authors’ description of the characters makes it easy to analyze them to a great depth.

Free Essays on St. Jean De Crevecoeur

Throughout the course of America there have been many perceptions as to what exactly the American Dream is and how to go about achieving that dream. St. Jean de Crevecoeur had his own perception of what the American Dream is and how to achieve that dream. Crevecoeur was one of the first American authors to ask what really makes an American. In his story entitled, What is an American? He shows in his view what an American is and what the American dream is all about. Crevecoeur’s perceptions of what the American Dream is and how people go about achieving it is a unique and accurate representation of what the American dream was to people of this time. One of Crevecoeur’s main beliefs that displayed what he thought of the American Dream was the fact that Americans came to this country from Europe, a place which was crowded and suppressed, unfair and showed no future advancements if one was not born to a rich family. Crevecoeur states, â€Å"If he travels through our rural districts he views not the hostile castle, and the haughty mansion, contrasted with the clay-built hut and miserable cabin, where cattle and men help to keep each other warm, and dwell in meanness, smoke, and indigence†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (255) â€Å"It is not composed, as in Europe, of great lords who possess every thing and of a herd of people who have nothing.†(255) By giving such a vivid description of what Europe must have seemed like for the average man passing through he shows just how free and open this new world is when he states, Crevecoeur states, â€Å"Here he beholds fair cities, substantial villages, extensive fields, an immense country filled with decent houses, good roads, orchards, meadows, and bridges, where an hundred years ago all was wild, woody and uncultivated!†(255) This would lead the reader to believe that his perceptions on the American Dream had much to do about occupying a once vacant area and you yourself being able to change the architecture of t...

Personal Narrative The Big Game Essays

Personal Narrative The Big Game Essays Personal Narrative The Big Game Essay Personal Narrative The Big Game Essay Essay Topic: Enders Game Narrative After working hard all basketball season, my team and I had our biggest game coming up to get prepared for, and that was the semi- finals of the district tournament. The team we was going to face was a very worthy competition. This team had a record of 26-5 and they were the 16th ranked team in the state. This was the game that was going to decide if it would be my last high school basketball game or not. I would’ve been discouraged if it was going to be my last game, because I loved this game and I have played it my whole life. Basketball has always helped me relieve stress I knew this was something I could play to get my mind off of things. I have been playing basketball for 14 years and I have been to a lot of camps just to prepare myself for games just like this. I knew my leadership as the team captain and point guard is important to not only myself but the team. I had to sacrifice for my teammates to do what it takes to win. Being a good leader becomes a big responsibility and I knew that I was capable of being a really good leader. I did everything I could for my teammates because I knew how much each and everybody loved this game. I was chosen to be a leader because I knew my team believed I could help achieve both my team’s goals and my own. The game was about to tip- off and Betsy Layne ended up getting the tip. As soon as the game started the Betsy Layne Bobcats went on a 12-0 run and there best player Sam Hall was feeling himselfas he didn’t miss a shot. Our only solution was to slow down the momentum of the Bobcats and control the tempo of the game. I knew it was all up to me to take over the game, and run the show just like my coach wanted me to do. The Bobcats miss there next shot and I get the ball. I raced down the floor as fast as I could, drove in the middle of the lane, drew two bobcat defenders and kicked the ball out to my shooting guard Seth Hall who with no hesitation drained the shot, it was our turn t

Coca-cola Enterprises Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Coca-cola Enterprises - Essay Example In this regard, the aim of the paper is to present a critical analysis of Coca-Cola Enterprises’ code of business conduct in terms of incorporating the three key components which exemplify the organisation’s values and adherence to business ethics. Critical Analysis of the Code Following a search for the organisation’s code of conduct, one oriented towards the stakeholders of the company was found: the Ethics and Compliance Office (Coca-Cola Enterprises, Code of Business Conduct, 2012). It was revealed that the Ethics and Compliance Office was tasked with the mission of designing an appropriate working environment that adheres to ethical standards. As such, it was disclosed that the â€Å"Code, serves as the foundation of the ethics and compliance program at CCE† (Coca-Cola Enterprises, Code of Business Conduct, 2012: Paragraph 2). ... by and follow the â€Å"RIGHT Way model of ethical values; (where the acronym RIGHT means maintaining) Respect, Integrity, Good judgement, Honesty and Trust† (CCE, CBC, 2012: p i) and forms an intergral value foundation of the organization’s way of doing business and conducting behavior with those they interact with. Similarly, another welcome message was produced by CCE’s Chief Compliance and Risk Officer and Vice President, Janice Placente, reiterating the mission of her office. The inclusion of these messages is relevant and consistent with content that is crucial in a code of conduct to affirm support from the top officers of the organisation’s hierarchy. This approach is also consistent with Erwin’s (2011) study, which indicated that integrating such items as part of the code implies it is of high quality, and so was effective in enforcing the guidelines contained therein. There is a table of contents which highlights the major points that are presented, as well as relevant supporting information. The entire code contains twenty-one pages from the introduction to the references. The major areas include: guidelines for personnel in interacting with colleagues; promotion of safety and health standards; preventing substance abuse; working with customers and suppliers; interacting with competitors; avoiding conflicts of interest; protecting company assets; maintaining accurate records; ensuring that the organization abides by laws on anti-corruption; ensuring that insider dealing is strictly avoided; preserving and conserving the environment; as well as actively collaborating with government agencies, as required (CCE, CBC, 2012: p. iii). The contents are indicative of the CCE’s commitment to provide guidelines to all stakeholders: from management to

The Role of Context in Biblical Hermeneutics Essay

The Role of Context in Biblical Hermeneutics - Essay Example Context plays a central role in the act of biblical interpretation. This paper is an attempt to demonstrate how this is so, and why this is so. It begins with a brief examination of the role of context in communication in general, which will then be applied to the activity of textual interpretation using the concept of the hermeneutic circle as developed by Frederich Schliermacher and Hans Georg Gadamer. Consider the following statement: â€Å"The Monkees are the greatest band ever.† On the face of it, the meaning seems obvious. It is a statement of the relative worth of The Monkees by comparison to all other musical acts throughout history. It implies that when compared with, say, the Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Metropolitan Opera Company, and all of the Homeric bards, that the Monkees come out on top. However, this is not necessarily the meaning the statement is intended to convey. If it is said in a grave voice, it may mean just this. If it is said in an excited voice while at a concert, we may take it as earnest hyperbole. However, if it is said in a hipster infested coffeehouse, we may take it to mean precisely the opposite. The meaning of any statement is subject to the same sort of factors. Their sense cannot be determined by the examination of the mere words used, rather they must be understood with reference to the total situation in which they are spoken. As this is with spoken communication, so it is with written texts. To return this to Biblical matters, we may examine the following Biblical quotation: â€Å"He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.†1 If this statement is truly taken without context, it makes a most surprising assertion. Namely, that God is a rock. Further, we find, with some surprise, that God, unlike other, more common examples of rocks, is the sort of rock that judges, and is just. One might wonder how to distinguish between ju st and unjust rocks, and indeed whether God is igneous, metamorphic or sedimentary. However, when this passages is juxtaposed with other descriptions of God found throughout the Bible, what is at first nonsensical transparently reveals itself to be metaphor. Of course, the above example is not entirely serious. No one has ever thought to read this passage as literally suggesting that God is a rock. However, this alone reveals something. Namely that everyone, instinctively, takes into account the surrounding passages, and the whole of their knowledge of the Bible when interpreting single verses. Further it sharply shows the dangers of taking biblical quotations out of context. One may ask how this works, and just how much of a role that context plays in this process. One approach would be to argue that context completely determines the meaning of individual statements, however, this seems as absurd as maintaining that context plays no role at all. It must be the case that context and statement both bear some weight in understanding a text. The German biblical and classical scholar Frederich Schliermacher proposed an interesting way to understand this relationship.2 When interpreting any text, he maintained, the part is always understood through the whole. Conversely, the whole is always understood by means of the individual parts. The relation is reciprocal. This reciprocal relation is usually referred to as â€Å"the hermeneutic circle.† An example may help to make clear how this works. One may find oneself reading through a political blog post and find oneself agreeing with it. Two-thirds of the way through, the author makes a blatantly bigoted statement. This, should, of course, give the reader pause, and the work of

The Civil War Produced More Radical Changes in America than the Essay

The Civil War Produced More Radical Changes in America than the Revolutionary War - Essay Example Here in this essay, I would discuss that whether the civil war produced more radical changes in America or the Revolutionary war. REVOLUTIONARY WAR: The ideology of John Locke impressed American Colonies and provoked them to fight for their rights. Locke wrote in â€Å"Two Treaties of Government† that it is beyond humanity to rule individuals and rejected the claim of kings and queens of having a divine right to rule masses. Locke infused the spirit of liberalism and democracy. (John Locke, 1821) The main idea of Revolutionary movement was to address the differences that lay within a mother country like religious, traditional and social differences. He stated: â€Å"The natural liberty of man is to be free from any superior power on earth, and not to be under the will or legislative authority of man, but to have only the law of Nature for his rule. The liberty of man in society is to be under no other legislative power but that established by consent in the commonwealth, nor under the dominion of any will, or restraint of any law, but what that legislative shall enact according to the trust put in it.† (John Locke, 1821) Evolutionary War was more than a political agenda and took course during 18th century which initiated in 1763. The seed was sown earlier after the British forces enforced the series of taxes on the American Colonies which was imposed in the name of defense and security cost. American colonies felt the discrimination that was made by British regulatory authorities as British person were not made liable to pay tax. The discrimination enraged American Colonies and in retaliation their Thirteen Colonies in North America collaborated and stood united to form a separate nation which would have no influence or governance from the British Empire. To make their move official, they rejected the rule of Parliament of Britain and together they cast out the royal officials. The colonies demanded for an elected representative in the ruling Brit ish Parliament and within the span of two years, American colonies formed Committees for Correspondence which would direct their own Provincial Congresses in majority of the colonies. The advantage of committees was enormous as it was easy for individuals to share and comment on different issues between British community and American Colonies. With a little more efforts, the provincial congresses proved to be effective and dismissed the parliament and replaced all British ruling bodies. In response to this political setback, British government tried hard to assert pressure and reform authority by dissolving local governments with the help of British troops and to impose rule directly from Royal officials. British troops were confronted by American militia in 1775. George Washington was chosen as commander in chief to guide and lead the army as American Militia lacked in almost every essential skill or training. Washington finely used both army and militia for his strategies to defea t British combat troops. Blacks were promised to be freed if they serve the army and soon blacks in large numbers were recruited in both the armies. Large number of blacks escaped and joined the British Army against Americans. After a constant fight between both nations, the Independence of America was declared on July 4, 1776. The main purpose was to achieve liberty, democracy and equality among the nation which was severely lacking in the British Empire. CIVIL WAR: (Nicolay, 2009) In the middle of 19th Century, Abraham Lincoln was chosen

Internal and External Factors Essay Example for Free

Internal and External Factors Essay In this paper, I will be discussing the internal as well as the external factors such as Globalization, technology, innovation, diversity and ethics affect the four functions of management in the restaurant plan. I will be using examples from each factor as well as using peer reviews from my team discussion. The globalization in the restaurant industry is crucial this measures the healthy financial side of the company by growing and interacting with different cultures. People travel on vacation all the time we go to different countries and we enjoy the different cuisine. Investors are always among this people and are looking for growth opportunity for their business concept. One very good example that we have is â€Å"GE which became a massive and profitable corporation by selling appliances, lightbulbs, and machinery to US customers, recently announced that it expected its foreign sales to equal the sales within the United States.† ( ) globalization also gives employers to choose from an array of indefinite talent and employees as well they benefit from all this by experiencing cultural change making them grow and be more valuable for their employer. Another item to add to this great way of growing is the internet it is such a valuable tool for companies now days they can advertise their goods and services to the consumer directly and targeting the right markets making it more cultural and diverse. â€Å"Successful CEOs know the local to the global market place is gaining momentum and it is irreversible.† ( ) globalization also makes possible for many employees to work from the comfort of their own home and in turn making it possible for companies to save in office space, for example someone can supervise employees from other countries this can also cause for your day to start very early and end very late. Technology just as globalization it is what makes companies to be successful by reaching in markets companies never thought possible.  Technology brings challenges as well as opportunities for business to grow at a rapid pace but if you blink you are out of your chance competition for new markets is very tuff and every one is just waiting for a chance to market their goods and services in a fast, easy and affordable way. The profit margin is bigger and companies thrive even in the worst economy. Some of the most successful companies are the web base companies that give consumers the choices of millions and millions of products at their fingertips. Technology also gives you the information you are looking for in the language you desire that is the beauty of technology we have all the information we need 24/7. Companies can compare their goods and services against other companies and get the cutting edge on how to gain more profit from any opportunity since at the end of the day the goals for any business is to make profit. The down side of technology is that there so much competition in the ecommerce industry that companies also lost much profit by investing their capital and was not able to get their investment back. Many people also made a bad career move thinking this was the right way to go many drop school and managers left their careers to pursue the ecommerce innovation path. One lesson we can all learn is that technology is just part of the business not the whole business in itself and most successful companies integrate both the traditional business concept as well as the ecommerce business. In the restaurant, industry technology brings a new set of challenges especially for people that are not comfortable with technology or are simple the older crowd and are not willing to change their way. Technology for someone like me is the best thing a restaurant can have it makes it creates simpler steps and I can see where my restaurant stands compare to others according to the metrics that we have in place. Innovation is inevitable for any company in the restaurant industry, we must adapt to the customers demand for new products and with this comes challenges in training and execution if your product is not up to consumer’s standards they will choose one of your competitors which means lost sales for the company and lower more hours for the employees. Innovation is also a great tool for the restaurant industry because now we can advertise our products and services in any social media and people are more aware of what is out there for them. In order to be successful, the restaurant industry must give its consumers what is advertised. In the restaurant industry  innovation comes from globalization and gives us a chance to reach out far more customers, as before we only had limited resources. Innovation is the key to keep the restaurant growing in different markets and being more profitable. Innovation is connected to quality, if we don’t execute.

Smart Homes Tries To Address Information

Smart Homes Tries To Address Information The present assignment on Smart homes tries to address every important aspect of new generation automated homes. The assignment initially focuses on what are these smart homes, and then the work progresses to put in brief detail the benefits of smart homes. Common technologies that are involved in the devices and systems that support smart homes are explained. Detailed explanation of prominent, significant tasks and targets which the smart homes are supposed to achieve are discussed. Finally a brief note on the future prospects of the concept and the currently available important smart home solutions in the market is given. Introduction: Advancements in the information and Communication Technology (ICT) front have enabled among many things, special research and development in the concept of safe and comfort living at homes. The concept of smart homes relates to fully automated homes where the residents can control every aspect and item of home even staying long away from it. This concept of safe living is gaining prominence because of many causes, some being, secured independent living of the elderly at homes, need for making homes burglar proof, turning homes energy efficient, remote operability of electronic equipments at home and safe up-keeping of infants and children alone at home. For the purpose of working on this assignment, I referred to many online sources like articles, presentations, websites, encyclopaedias etc. What are smart homes? Smart homes are future proof homes. Smart homes are intelligent homes which are run by fully automated devices and technologies. These homes which make use of various highly advanced technologies increase the quality of living immensely. An industry definition of Smart home is, a smart home is a home where the systems (security, lighting, sensors, heating and air-conditioning, audio-video etc.) are interconnected to allow the automatic or remote control of the home to save energy, improve comfort, safety and or convenience for the homeowner. A smart home enhances the value of a home (SMARTHOME, 2010a). Especially, families whose members need special round the clock care and assistance, where people stay away from home for long for career purposes, when some members of family are on intensive and sensitive medication, when elders of the family live in isolation at home all alone and for many more such security and service purposes, people are increasingly resorting to making their domestic environments fully automated. Though the level of automation varies based on needs and money spending capacity, every home where significant part of domestic space is controlled and run by customised technology gadgets can be referred to as a Smart home. When ones chances staying at home all the time are limited, and want to make some necessary things happen in their absence, to make sure that the security of the home is guarded uncompromisingly, to ensure that the available resources are put to optimum use, to make things happen in their normal course even in ones absence, to take maximum care of elderly people and disabled family members, one can deploy suitable and selected active technologies in the forms of remotely accessible electronic gadgets, robots etc to ensure that all such needs are best served. Depending on the need spectrum and the monetary strength, these days, increasing number of families are showing interest in making their domestic environments automated, served and guarded by latest electronic systems and pre-programmed and self maintainable equipments. With automated homes owners can have peace of mind, even in their prolonged, compulsive absence from their homes and can make happen every thing that their normal presence would definitely do, ranging from watering the garden to giving a definite quantity of pesticide spray to infected plants. Benefits of smart homes: Important advantages or benefits of smart homes are safety, comfort and convenience. The joy of being able to control home lighting systems, room temperatures, water storage, surveillance systems, garden sprinkler and much more such handy options is very unique. Smart homes let the owners to have many automated opportunities of independent living. Various home automation equipment and gadgets facilitate easy and remote management of electronic devices at home like, managing illumination levels of lighting systems depending on the day light levels, can help see what is happening in ones absence with the help of closed circuit cameras, can schedule the television viewing times of children, can operate equipment in kitchen like coffee maker, microwave ovens, dish washers and the like, can view favourite movies from any TV in any room, can maintain cleanliness of domestic environments with remote operable or programmed robots and many more such functions that ease living and bring in safe comfort (Discovery Communications Inc., n.d.). In smart homes all the electronic devices can be put under user programmed, single point control. Primary purpose of most of such equipment is to provide safe domestic environment. They make homes intrusion proof and can send warning messages to the owners in case of any unforeseen emergency and can even send similar signals to police or fire fighter services. With special equipment like thermostats users can remotely operate and control functioning of heating and cooling systems like air conditioners to save energy when they are not used. Important benefit of smart home is reliable care of elders at home. When we stay away from home leaving back our beloved elders, with the help of programmed robots and remote controlled cameras we can ensure that they take their medicines in time and monitor their health and activity status (eHow, Inc., 2010). Further, these days almost every one is having internet at their living places. By placing all the computers in the home well connected in a wireless network and configuring to a WiFi system, we can move around the home with our laptops while staying perfectly connected to internet. Thus Smart homes house well connected and networked devices that operate in full preset rhythm and in perfect coordination to serve every special need of owners. Thus the present generation homes are turning to be intelligent homes. Technologies involved: The whole concept of Smart homes depends on the advanced technologies and the modern smart equipment that are employed in the home. There are wide spectrum of such technological services and automated devices especially designed and developed for this purpose. To better study their functionality, according to (Dewsbury, Taylor Edge, 2001), all the services provided by various high end devices and technologies that help build a smart home can be categorised as: Assistive Technologies Adaptive Technologies Inclusive Technologies Medical Technologies Assistive technologies are that category of scientific systems and electronic devices, which enable the users to execute such tasks at home which otherwise they would not be able to do because of their absence from home. These are the devices which can be made to function in a specific way and can be controlled remotely also. Adaptive technologies are the ones which can be custom programmed to suit user specific functional requirements. Thus they are the devices that come with modifiable functionality. Inclusive devices are also called as Design for all systems that come with capability do multiple tasks depending on the user needs and demands. Finally, medical devices are a wide range of equipments that come with huge functional spectrum of services of medical assistance. They range from medical diagnostic devices, sterilisation units, health monitoring systems, medication dosage checkers and emergency service equipment. Tasks: Elder care: Important requirement of present families is that, as all the other members go to their work place, the elderly people are left at home all alone. The younger ones though go out; they want to serve every need of their beloved parents and grand parents at home. For this the smart home technologies offer a lot of options for their safety and security. They range from many emergency assistance systems, security equipment, burglar alarms, pre-programmed timers to remind them to take medicines in time, walking assistant robots, emergency calling facility to contact doctors, police or fire fighters, closed circuit TV cameras, remote operable micro wave ovens, automated room heating or cooling systems to maintain temperature that makes them feel comfort etc. Primary purpose of these equipments and technologies is to ensure safety and convenience when they are alone at home (Smart House Services for Elderly and Disabled People, 2008). Some examples are, smart shirts which instantaneously an d at regular intervals measure body temperature, cardiac functioning etc. Some other devices monitor blood sugar levels. The new generation elderly care equipment are designed to have in them artificial intelligence features. A recent invention by a scientific research group invented a robot pet cat Near Me. The speciality of this is that it perfectly resembles a living pet and it is programmed to behave in a very warm amicable way and also beeps at regular intervals for medicine intake. New in this is that with its chubby, sweet movements it gives the users a feel of lively togetherness. This soothing feeling spreads good psychological and emotional support which can reduce their lonely feeling. Infant and Child care: When all the elders in the home are job holders and have to leave their loved little ones at home, the present smart home technologies and devices which are available can assure the parents safety at home. With coordinated functioning of closed circuit TV cameras, remotely operable toys, security covers and safety alarms, controlled TV viewing, parental controls on internet browsing etc are the presently obtainable child care solutions for smart homes. Further, some companies are developing play robots, which can amuse children while keeping close watch on their activities and needs. Pets: When families raise multiple pets, the owners absence is a problem. To answer this smart homes these days are housing technologies and devices that help fulfil all pet needs. Some solutions focus on timely arrangement of food and fresh water stored in highly hygienic conditions. Some pest repellent devices help make up a fly and mosquito free domestic environs. Other devices for arranging timely food and drinking water are pet auto feeders, self maintaining water bowls and heated hoses for water supply in harsh winters (SMARTHOME, 2010b). Energy savers: Smart homes need to be energy efficient. Most of the energy saving smart home gadgets makes use of solar power to feed lamps. There can be wide number of varieties of such devices that serve different purposes in smart home and their source of energy is solar heat. Some examples of such products are pool water purifiers, wireless room sensors, intruder motion sensors, solar powered flood lights, solar timers, light sensors, electrified fencing etc. Based on the power saving needs and level of affordability users can choose appropriate ones. Some solar powered devices help watering gardens and control sprinkler functioning based on video feeds from closed circuit TV cameras installed at different parts inside and outside of home surroundings. Access Control mechanisms: These are the primary requirements of any smart home. Security maintenance is a big challenge. The presently available solutions are offering solutions to nearly every safety need of house holds. The prime target of all these devices and smart technologies is to make home burglar and intruder proof. These systems need to make homes security breach proof. For this the available solutions range from, motion or occupancy sensors, wirelessly operable alarm systems, alert message generators during emergencies, door lock control and status sensors, window pane trackers, temperature, smoke and fire monitoring and sensing systems, washing machine water valve maintenance kit, Carbon Monoxide, Methane, LPG leakage sensors, automatic alert generation systems, garage shutter alerts, humidity alerts etc. Further, cash safes in the homes need to be guarded with very high strength. For this robber proof safes are available in numerous varieties depending on money. Further, the main gate and door st atus recorders, CCTV cameras arranged at different places would help monitor security status of home while staying far away form home also. Coordinated functioning of these surveillance systems help best maintain and guard security of home. Kitchen: Another important area where the home automation levels are best reflected is the kitchen. The supportive tools of smart home in kitchen include remote controlled micro wave ovens, coffee makers, wirelessly controllable dish washers, dangerous gas leakage sensors, automatic LPG cylinder operability, wirelessly controlling the power supply to kitchen etc. Some devices automatically switch off power supply to kitchen once cooking is over and motion sensors detect no movements there (Spacely Marketing Group, 2010). This helps minimise electric and gas hazards of kitchen. Lighting technologies: Technical devices like light dimmers, lighting appliance controller equipments help misguide thieves and intruders. These devices control the functioning of lights in the home to give an impression to the outside gazer that owners are present in the home. This helps keeping them away. Some shadow sensors arranged of window panes generate alarms and alert messages, if any suspected shadow falls on window glass panes. Further electric fences give protection from thieves and burglars. New entrants in this area of security appliances are robotic surveillance services, where pre programmed, and guard robots of different forms continue surveillance in all parts of the home and its surroundings. They are equipped with high resolution cameras and emergency response capabilities. Some times users may wish to use perimeters also. The list of smart home technologies presently available cannot be put in any single list. The most prominent and important services and common device functionalities are discussed here. But depending on the safety security needs and other special requirements users can choose from a wide spectrum of smart home solutions. Available solutions: Important service and technology provider of this generation smart homes is briefly discussed here. Smart Home Home Automation Superstore has a very big smart home services and devices list. Their product range includes, intercoms and phones, remote controlled devices, solar energy savers, shadow sensors, lighting dimmers related appliance control, door locking systems, thermostats temperature maintenance systems, timers alarm generators, pet maintenance equipment and many more like these (SMARTHOME, 2010c). Future of the concept: Future of the smart home concept is very bright. The future home security systems, that are under different development and research stages are focussing on adding artificial intelligence to the performance and functioning of these electronic and technical gadgets. The growing threats to home privacy and secured living, people are increasingly resorting to smart home solutions. With more advanced research in this regard the future security systems may be far more modern and strongly reliable. A normally accepted thing is that the future smart home systems largely rely on humanoid robots that are artificially intelligent and guarantee a highly secured and convenient living at home. Conclusion: The concept of smart homes is widely becoming popular with general public with moderate spending capacity. The market is also replete with wide variety of options to build and maintain smart homes. The presently available products and technical services are providing user friendly interfaces at the same time strong security for all aspects of home living. Given the current situation and the projected future of this dynamic concept, one can be sure that in near future theft and burglar proof homes and cities are on the anvil.
